UK MCA pathway
Cadet enrolment (typically Warsash, City of Glasgow College, or South Tyneside) → 24 months sea time + course modules → OOW Unlimited (STCW II/1). Then 12 months sea time as OOW + Chief Mate prep course → Chief Mate Unlimited (II/2 management). Then 12 months sea time as Chief Mate + Master prep course + oral exam → Master Unlimited. Total time-to-Master: typically 7-9 years from cadet enrolment. UK MCA is generally regarded as one of the more rigorous regimes.
USCG pathway
Cadet enrolment at USMMA, SUNY Maritime, Mass Maritime, Cal Maritime, GLMA, or Maine Maritime → 4-year BSc with USCG 3M Unlimited licence on graduation. Then USCG-administered sea time + course modules for promotion: 24 months sea time + courses → 2M licence, then 24 months + courses → Chief Mate, then 12 months + Master oral → Master Unlimited. Total time-to-Master: 8-10 years from college enrolment. USCG's licensing structure is unique with its Federal-issued credentials.
Philippine MARINA pathway
Cadet enrolment at PMMA, MAAP, John B. Lacson, or similar → 4-year BS Marine Transportation with MARINA-issued 3rd Mate (or equivalent) on completion. Sea-time accumulation and additional course-modules for promotion: roughly 24 months sea time per rank to 2nd Officer → 1st Officer → Master. Total time-to-Master: 8-12 years. MARINA's CoC is internationally recognised under STCW; many Filipino Masters serve under foreign flags via endorsement.
Indian DG Shipping pathway
Cadet enrolment at IMU, Tolani Maritime Institute, Indian Naval College, or similar → 3-year B.Sc. Nautical Science → 18 months sea time → 2nd Mate CoC. Then sea-time + course modules → 1st Mate (3 years), then Master (further 3 years sea time). Total time-to-Master: 9-12 years. Indian DG Shipping oral exams are notably demanding; pass rates are below 50% for first attempts.
Norwegian Sjøfartsdirektoratet pathway
Cadet entry through NTNU or specialised maritime schools (Maritime Academy Bergen) → 3-year programme with sea-time + courses → D4 Watch Officer. Then sea time as D4 → D3 (equivalent of OOW Unlimited). Then sea time + management courses → D2 (Chief Mate). Then further sea time + Master prep → D1 (Master Unlimited). Total time: 7-9 years typical. Norwegian system is notable for the strong shore-based mentoring and operator-sponsored education tradition.
