How to use this directory: platforms are grouped below by type. Drillships and semi-submersibles drill new wells; FPSOs receive, process, and export oil from already-producing fields; jack-ups operate in shallow water and lift themselves out of the sea on legs. FLNG units produce liquefied natural gas at sea (rare and large). Heavy-lift specialist vessels install or remove the platforms themselves. Many offshore officers cross between vessel types over a career; engineering officers tend to specialise more.
