Deep-sea cargo (container + bulk + tanker)
The conventional engineering pathway: Engine Cadet → 4th Engineer → 3rd Engineer → 2nd Engineer → Chief Engineer. Promotion is gated by sea-time, course-time (STCW III/2 short courses), and a flag-administration oral exam. Pay scales by rank: 4/E around US$3,500-4,500, 3/E US$4,500-6,000, 2/E US$6,500-9,000, C/E US$9,000-15,000. Within this, tanker engineer pay runs slightly higher than bulk and container due to MARPOL and tanker-endorsement complexity. Career rhythm: 4-6 month contracts, equal leave.
Cruise
Cruise engine rooms run dual-fuel diesel-electric plants, integrated power management systems, and high passenger-comfort engineering loads (HVAC, water-making, sewage treatment) that exceed cargo-ship engineering complexity. Cruise engineer career path includes the same STCW certificates plus electronics-heavy expectations — electro-technical experience is increasingly important. Pay scales lower than tanker / LNG but contract length is longer (5-8 months) and the work environment is more varied. Pipeline: many cruise engineers come from cargo backgrounds and find cruise less hierarchical.
Offshore (OSV / drillship / FPSO)
Offshore engineering is a specialist sector with its own pay premium. DP-system maintenance, jack-up rig operations, and FPSO process-engineering exposure command higher pay than equivalent cargo-ship ranks. Offshore C/E pay runs US$18,000-25,000+/month on FPSO and drillship tonnage. The rotation pattern is different too: 28/28 or 35/35 day rotations rather than 4-6 month contracts, which suits some lifestyles and excludes others. Entry requires sector-specific course-time (DP, ship-handling, well-control awareness).
LNG and gas carriers
LNG engineering is the highest-paid mainstream segment. Cargo engineering on LNG requires IGF Code Basic + Advanced certification plus operator-specific GTT-membrane or Moss-spherical containment training. LNG C/E pay: US$18,000-22,000+/month routinely. LNG engineering experience also positions crew well for the LNG-fuelled commercial-fleet transition (CMA CGM Jacques Saadé class, Carnival Mardi Gras, Royal Caribbean Icon class) which is creating engineering demand across previously-cargo fleets.
Cross-sector mobility
Engineers who carry credentials across multiple sectors are most valuable. The most portable combination is deep-sea cargo (for general competency) + tanker endorsement (V/1-1) + IGF Code (for the LNG-fuel transition). This combination opens cargo-ship, tanker, LNG, and LNG-fuelled-cruise positions. Pure-cruise or pure-offshore engineers are less mobile but earn more in their primary sector.
