Typical requirements
Class 1 Master Mariner Unlimited CoC + 5-10 years' Master sea time + specific-port qualification. Local knowledge examination + working the port under supervision for 6-12 months.
Pay + working conditions
US pilot pay: US$300k-800k+ per year on major-port routes. UK: £70-150k typical. Australia: A$200-400k. Working conditions vary — busy ports often 24-hour standby + irregular sleep.
Career longevity
Pilots typically work to age 60-65. Physical demands (climbing pilot ladders in all weather) is the primary career-ending factor.
