Tanker officer to LNG — dual-fuel specialisation pathway

LNG-carrier officer pay premium of 20-30% over equivalent oil/product tanker rank makes the transition financially compelling.

Credential additions

STCW A-V/1-2 Advanced Training for Liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations (IMO Model Course 1.05). GTT-membrane or Moss-spherical containment-type training from operator.

Operational timing

Typically move as Second Officer + accumulate sea time on LNG carrier before Chief Mate promotion. Some operators run direct-transfer schemes.

Pay uplift

Junior officer: 15-20% uplift immediately post-transition. Chief Mate: 20-30% uplift. Master: 25-40% uplift. Absolute LNG Master pay US$18,000-22,000+/month routinely.

Career longevity

LNG fleet is the fastest-growing tanker segment. Cross-over to LNG-fuelled cargo (CMA CGM class, cruise) as decarbonisation drives dual-fuel adoption.
