Services available

Free wifi
Most centres offer free wifi covering email, video calls, messaging apps, and modest social-media use. Bandwidth is rarely sufficient for streaming HD video or large file downloads. Bring a working unlocked phone or laptop; the centre may have a guest-network password posted, or you may need to ask at the desk.
Transport to/from the ship
Most port-side welfare centres provide a van or minibus shuttle between the ship's berth and the centre, and onward into town. Transport is normally free but may have set departure times. Ask the chaplaincy in advance — or call the centre's helpline — to confirm pick-up timing. Bring your gate pass and seaman's book for terminal security.
Shop
A small on-site shop typically sells SIM cards, basic toiletries, snacks, soft drinks, prepaid phone-credit vouchers, and sometimes small gifts and clothing. Stock is limited; this is not a supermarket. Cash in the local currency is most reliable, though cards are usually accepted in larger centres.
Chaplaincy / ship visits
Chaplains visit ships in port (port chaplains) and serve at the welfare centre. Their role is pastoral support, practical help (transport, money-changing, hospital visits, family-emergency communication), and confidential conversation. You do not need to share their religion to ask for help.
Counselling
Chaplains and welfare workers provide confidential one-to-one counselling on personal, family, financial, or work-related concerns. Conversations are bound by professional confidentiality. For longer-term mental-health support, the Sailors' Society's Wellness at Sea programme and ISWAN's SeafarerHelp 24-hour multilingual helpline are also accessible from any centre.

About Deutsche Seemannsmission

Deutsche Seemannsmission (DSM) is the German Protestant seafarer-welfare ministry, founded in 1900. DSM operates port chaplaincies and centres in Germany (Hamburg, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbuettel, Stade, Lubeck, Rostock, Kiel) and abroad (Antwerp, Rotterdam, the US Gulf, China, the Philippines). DSM cooperates closely with the Mission to Seafarers, Stella Maris, and Sailors' Society as a member of the International Christian Maritime Association (ICMA).

Mission

Care for seafarers regardless of nationality, faith, or rank, through ship visits, port-side centres, mental-health support, and legal advocacy.

What to expect

DSM centres in Germany — particularly the Duckdalben centre in Hamburg, an international award winner — are among the largest and best-equipped seafarer welfare facilities in the world: free wifi, restaurant, shop, transport, chapel, and a wide range of cultural activities. Smaller German DSM centres still provide all core services.

What to bring

Bring your seaman's book for the Schengen-entry paperwork and your photo ID for the shop and any money-changing service. Cash in Euros is useful for the shop; cards are normally accepted.
