Overview

Holland America Line, founded in Rotterdam in 1873 and now owned by Carnival Corporation, operates 11 mid-sized premium ships specialised in longer itineraries — Alaska, world cruises, Northern Europe, Antarctic. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, the line attracts an older, higher-spend demographic and historically retains the Dutch maritime heritage in its officer training and onboard culture.

For seafarers

Crew contracts run 6-9 months with mid-tier pay. Itineraries are longer than the major mass-market lines, with proportionally less port time, so the working rhythm is different — fewer change-over days, more sea days. HAL is one of the larger employers of Indonesian crew in the hotel department (a historical legacy of Dutch colonial-era recruitment from the Indonesian archipelago).

Watch for

World-cruise vessels do segments of 100+ days; check whether you're rostered for a full world cruise or a segment, as port and crew-change opportunities differ massively. HAL retains some Dutch officer-pipeline preference; Dutch-language is useful but not required.
