Overview

Hurtigruten Group (Norwegian: 'the express route') operates a 14-ship fleet split between the Norwegian coastal-express service (a daily route between Bergen and Kirkenes that doubles as a passenger cruise and a cargo/mail service) and expedition itineraries to the Arctic, Antarctic, Greenland, and the Galapagos. Headquartered in Tromsø, Norway. The fleet includes the world's first hybrid-electric expedition vessels.

For seafarers

Crew contracts run 3-5 months with mid-to-high pay tier, with the Norwegian operations subject to Norwegian labour law (significantly stronger seafarer protections than international tonnage). The coastal-express service has rotating Norwegian and international crew; expedition fleet is more internationally crewed. Polar deployment requires ice-class capability for marine officers and substantial cold-weather operational experience.

The Norwegian coastal-express service runs every day of the year with regular crew changes at Bergen — a fundamentally different cadence from cruise.
