Entry-level unlicensed deck rating assigned general duties under the supervision of ABs and the bosun.
In practice
The OS is engaged in the widest variety of tasks aboard: assisting with mooring operations, cleaning decks and accommodation spaces, painting, lookout duties, and learning the practical skills of seamanship from more experienced ratings. Under MLC 2006, all seafarers must be at least 16 years of age, and those under 18 are subject to restrictions on night work and hazardous duties. Progression from OS to AB requires accumulated sea service and demonstrated competence, making the OS grade the foundation of a maritime deck career.
Regulatory detail & full definition
An Ordinary Seaman (OS) is the entry-level unlicensed rating in the deck department, assigned general duties under the direct supervision of able seamen and the bosun. No formal sea service certificate is required for the OS grade, but holders must normally possess the basic safety training certificates mandated by STCW VI/1 — personal survival techniques, fire prevention and fire fighting, elementary first aid, and personal safety and social responsibilities — before joining a vessel in any capacity.
