Auxiliary Engine

Auxiliary engines are medium-speed four-stroke diesel generator sets providing the electrical power that runs virtually every system aboard a ship, from accommodation lighting to cargo pumps and navigational equipment. A typical cargo vessel carries three or four generator sets, each capable of supplying several hundred to several thousand kilowatts, so that maintenance or failure of one unit does not interrupt supply. SOLAS Chapter II-1/41 requires that electrical installations be arranged to maintain essential services even after a single failure. Watchkeeping engineers monitor load sharing between running generators, fuel consumption, cooling water temperatures, and exhaust back-pressure. Fuel changeover from HFO to MDO before entering Emission Control Areas is often managed at the auxiliary engines first, since their smaller fuel systems clear more quickly. Regular load tests and insulation resistance measurements are recorded in the engine-room log as evidence of compliance with flag state and classification society survey requirements.
