Ballast Water Standard D-1

Ballast Water Performance Standard D-1 under the BWM Convention — ballast water exchange standard requiring at least 95% volume exchange in deep ocean water (typically beyond 200 nautical miles from the nearest land and at least 200 m water depth). D-1 was the interim standard during the BWM Convention phase-in and is being replaced by the D-2 performance standard for almost all ships by 2024. Where exchange is impractical because of geographic constraints, alternative areas are designated by Administrations under specific circumstances.
