A transverse propulsion unit fitted in a tunnel through the bow section to improve low-speed manoeuvrability in port.
Bow thrusters are not effective above around three knots of vessel speed because forward motion creates hydrodynamic forces that overwhelm the transverse thrust. Engineers monitor the motor current, cooling water flow, and gearbox oil level during thruster operations and carry out periodic inspection of the tunnel anodes and propeller condition in drydock. The bow thruster is a key element of the ship's manoeuvring capability declared in the wheelhouse poster and must be factored into the master's assessment of port entry requirements under SOLAS V/34.
