The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) 1972 are the international rules of the road for shipping. 41 rules covering steering + sailing (Part B), lights + shapes (Part C), sound + light signals (Part D), and exemptions + technical annexes. Every OOW knows COLREGs by heart. Rule 5 (look-out), Rule 6 (safe speed), Rule 7 (risk of collision), Rule 8 (action to avoid collision), Rules 11-18 (conduct in sight), Rules 19 (restricted visibility) are exam-worthy.
