Electronic Chart Display + Information System is the mandatory digital chart display on SOLAS ships (progressively 2012-2018). Displays ENC (Electronic Navigational Chart) data, own-ship position, route + route-check functions, safety-contour alarms, and integrates AIS + radar. Two independent ECDIS systems allow paperless navigation; single ECDIS requires paper-chart backup. Type-specific training under STCW is mandatory for the specific ECDIS manufacturer/model onboard.
