SafetyNET

Inmarsat Enhanced Group Call SafetyNET service, used to broadcast Maritime Safety Information (MSI) to GMDSS Sea Areas A3 and A4 where NAVTEX cannot reach. SafetyNET broadcasts navigational warnings, meteorological warnings, search-and-rescue information, and pilot service messages to all ships in a defined geographic area. IMO Resolution A.1051(27) sets the service standards. Inmarsat-C terminals (and from 2025 Iridium SafetyCast) receive EGC; the receiver auto-decodes and prints messages relevant to the ship's position. Ships moving between NAVAREAs receive automatic re-registration.
