Heat exchanger in the funnel that recovers waste heat from main-engine exhaust to generate steam.

In practice

Continuous duty on container ships and tankers above 6 MW. The engineer monitors steam pressure / temperature, soot deposition, and tube fouling. Soot fires inside the EGE economiser are a documented and serious risk; manual cleaning intervals follow OEM advice.

Regulatory detail & full definition

Standard fit on most cargo vessels >= 5,000 GT. Steam is used for fuel heating (HFO needs ~120 deg C for injection viscosity), accommodation heating, fresh-water generator, and (on some ships) cargo heating. Soot blowers fitted to clear deposits; without them, fires in the EGE are a known incident pattern.
