Compact, high-bollard-pull tug used for berthing, unberthing, and shifting ships within a port.
Regulatory detail & full definition
Compact, high-bollard-pull tug used for berthing, unberthing, and shifting ships within a port. Typical bollard pull is 50–80 t and length 25–35 m; common drive types are ASD, tractor, and conventional twin-screw with rotors. Harbour tugs operate at low speeds and short distances, making manoeuvrability and rapid response more important than range or seakeeping. Most ports require at least one tug for tankers above a defined size and additional tugs at higher tonnage thresholds; the OCIMF Mooring Equipment Guidelines address tug selection at terminals.
