Impressed Current Cathodic Protection

Impressed Current Cathodic Protection — active corrosion-control system injecting low-voltage DC current into the hull through inert anodes (typically platinum-coated titanium or mixed metal oxide) mounted on the underwater hull. Reference electrodes monitor hull-to-water potential and the system controller adjusts current to maintain potential in the protective range (typically -0.85 to -1.1 V vs Ag/AgCl). ISO 20313:2018 covers ICCP design and operation. ICCP is used on most large commercial vessels, often supplemented by sacrificial anodes in shielded areas where current flow is poor.
