Vessel with reinforced bow, high-power propulsion, and ice-friendly hull form designed to break level ice and clear channels.
Regulatory detail & full definition
Vessel purpose-built to break level ice and clear navigable channels, distinguished by a strongly raked stem (typically 18–25° from horizontal at the design waterline), reinforced bow plating, high installed power per displacement, and a hull form optimised for breaking by riding up on the ice and using the vessel weight to fracture it. Modern Russian, Finnish and Canadian icebreakers carry IACS Polar Class PC1 to PC4 ratings. Many also carry escort and emergency-tow equipment; nuclear-powered Russian icebreakers maintain the Northern Sea Route under Glavsevmorput tariffs and routing controls.
