A classification survey conducted midway through the five-year special survey cycle, typically around the second or third year.
For tankers and bulk carriers subject to the enhanced programme of inspections (ESP) under IMO Resolution A.744(18), the intermediate survey requirements are more demanding, including close-up surveys of structural members in specified cargo tanks or holds, thickness gauging, and testing of high-level alarms and overpressure/vacuum protection. The chief officer and chief engineer must prepare detailed maintenance records and ensure that all identified defects from previous surveys have been rectified before the surveyor's attendance. Satisfactory completion of the intermediate survey results in an endorsement on the classification certificate confirming continued class without conditions.
