One of 21 IMO/IHO-designated sea areas within which a co-ordinating authority issues numbered navigational warnings to mariners.
NAVAREA is one of 21 geographical sea areas established jointly by the International Maritime Organization and the International Hydrographic Organization under the World-Wide Navigational Warning Service (WWNWS). Each NAVAREA is assigned a Roman numeral (I–XXI) and a co-ordinating authority — typically a national hydrographic or maritime safety office — responsible for promulgating NAVAREA warnings covering hazards to navigation within that area.
NAVAREA warnings are broadcast via SafetyNET (Inmarsat-C EGC), NAVTEX where coverage permits, and high-frequency radio in the appropriate GMDSS Sea Area. They cover items such as newly reported dangers, changes to aids to navigation, military exercises, and oceanographic obstructions. Warnings are numbered sequentially within each calendar year and remain active until cancelled by the co-ordinating authority.
The WWNWS is described in the IHO/IMO joint publication 'World-Wide Navigational Warning Service — Guidance Document' and is supported under SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 4, which requires contracting governments to arrange for the collection and dissemination of Maritime Safety Information. Masters are expected to maintain a continuous watch on appropriate MSI services for their operational sea area.
