STCW Medical Fitness Certificate

Medical certificate confirming a seafarer meets STCW Reg. I/9 and ILO Maritime Labour Convention 2006 medical fitness standards covering vision, hearing, cardiovascular, respiratory, and general health to perform shipboard duties without endangering self or others. The standard is set out in the ILO/IMO Joint Guidelines (2013) and applied by approved doctors nominated by the seafarer's flag state. Maximum validity is two years (one year for seafarers under 18). Certificates are scrutinised at PSC inspections and are a routine cause of repatriation when a seafarer's condition changes mid-contract.
