York-Antwerp Rules

International rules governing the calculation and apportionment of general average. Current versions in active use are YAR 1994 and YAR 2016, with the 2016 revision tightening the rules on salvage allowance, clean-up costs, and ROB bunker recovery. The CMI publishes the rules and they are typically incorporated into the contract of carriage by a clause in the bill of lading or charter party. Average adjusters apply the rules to allocate sacrifice and expenditure among ship, cargo, and freight interests in proportion to their salved values.
