Demurrage clock

Laytime is the period allowed for loading or discharging cargo under a charterparty. Once that period expires, demurrage accrues at a daily rate until the vessel is released. If the vessel is released before laytime expires, despatch may be earned (typically at half the demurrage rate).

NOR (Notice of Readiness) — tendered when the vessel has arrived at the port and is ready in all respects to load or discharge.
SHINC — Sundays and Holidays Included (all time counts).
SHEX — Sundays and Holidays Excluded (those periods do not count as laytime).
WWD — Weather Working Days (bad weather days are excluded; same Sunday exclusion as SHEX).

When to use this tool

On arrival at a load or discharge port when NOR is tendered and the Master needs a running clock during cargo operations. Also useful for the Charterparty desk shore-side to monitor real-time exposure to demurrage claims during port delays (port congestion, weather stoppage, terminal breakdown).

Worked example

Scenario: Panamax bulker Norfolk load. NOR tendered 06:00 local 5 Nov. Accepted 14:00 same day (turn time consumed 8 h — customary 6 h means 2 h counts as laytime). CP: 72 running hours SHINC. Demurrage rate $17,500/day.

At 6 Nov 14:00 (24 h elapsed): Laytime consumed 26 h (2 h turn + 24 h), remaining 46 h. No demurrage yet.

At 8 Nov 12:00 (46 h elapsed since NOR accepted, plus 2 h turn = 48 h laytime):Just under 24 h remain. If cargo finishes 8 Nov 20:00 → 8 h + 2 h = 56 h laytime consumed → 16 h below allowance → despatch earned $5,833 (16 h × $17,500 / 24 h / 2).

Regulatory basis

Not directly regulated by IMO; governed by the specific charterparty terms. Standard clauses: NYPE (time), GENCON (voyage), ASBATANKVOY (tanker voyage). WWD SHINC / SHEX / weather-working-day and other qualifications materially affect calculation. Master's SoF (Statement of Facts) counter-signed with the agent drives the calculation.
