Dynamic Positioning (DP) is the automated system by which a vessel maintains its position and heading using propellers + thrusters guided by position-reference sensors (GNSS + hydroacoustic + taut-wire + inertial + gyro) under computer control. DP is essential for offshore drilling (drillships + semi-submersibles), offshore construction (pipe-lay + cable-lay + heavy-lift), IMR (inspection + maintenance + repair), diving support, and cruise-ship dynamic-positioning-in-lieu-of-anchoring. IMO MSC/Circ.645 (Guidelines for Vessels with Dynamic Positioning Systems, 1994) + IMCA M-103 (Guidelines for the Design + Operation of Dynamically Positioned Vessels) are the internationally recognised references.
Loss of position may occur in the event of a single fault. No redundancy required. Single computer + single power system + single set of thrusters. Cheapest to build; adequate for low-consequence operations (e.g. survey vessels, some PSVs on non-critical station). Not permitted for drilling or diving operations.
Loss of position should NOT occur from a single fault of an active component or system. Redundant computers, redundant power generation, redundant thrusters. Common cause failures (e.g. fire in one machinery space) can still cause loss of position — hence DP2 is not permitted for "man in the water" operations. Standard for most offshore-supply + IMR + light-construction work. IMCA M-103 Table 1 covers minimum DP2 configuration.
Loss of position should NOT occur from any single failure including fire in one compartment or flooding. Full redundancy through fire-safe + water-safe compartment segregation. Redundant computers in physically separate compartments; two independent power distribution + control networks. Required for drilling + diving + heavy-construction operations where personnel are exposed to consequences of DP failure. Highest cost tier; typical for drillships + saturation-diving DSVs + heavy-lift vessels + Prelude FLNG.

Senior DPO progression: 3-5 years experience on DP2/DP3 tonnage + endorsement by operator. Some clients (e.g. Shell, ExxonMobil) require additional operator-specific competence assessment.
DP officers on drilling + diving-support tonnage are among the highest-paid berths in merchant + offshore shipping. Senior DPO on a drillship in deepwater areas (West Africa, Guyana, GoM) can earn substantially more than a comparable-rank Master on conventional merchant tonnage. High rotation (28-on / 28-off or similar) partially compensates for higher stress + complexity.
