Ice class describes a vessel's structural + machinery capability to operate safely in ice-covered waters. Two principal classification frameworks are used commercially: the Finnish-Swedish Ice Class Rules (FSICR) for the Baltic + White Sea winter trade, and the IACS Polar Class (PC) rules for full Arctic and Antarctic operations. National societies (RS, ABS, DNV, LR, ClassNK, BV) each translate these into notations on their class certificates. The IMO Polar Code (mandatory since 2017 for polar waters) sets operational + equipment requirements distinct from — but interlocked with — the structural ice class.
Developed jointly by Finland + Sweden for winter navigation in the Baltic and White Sea. Applied by the Finnish + Swedish maritime administrations as a condition of icebreaker escort + Baltic port fee discounts. Four categories:

Requirements: strengthened shell plating in the ice belt, reinforced propeller + rudder, reduced-CoG machinery arrangement to survive ice-block impact on the stern, and specific machinery power-to-weight ratios ensuring the vessel can maintain steerageway in ice. Baltic winter (December-March) traffic to ports like Kokkola, Kemi, and Oulu (Finland), and Luleå + Piteå (Sweden) requires IA or IA Super.

Russia's Northern Sea Route regulation uses RS Register's own Arc-notation system, developed for the specific ice regime of the Kara + Laptev + East Siberian + Chukchi Seas. Broadly equivalent to IACS PC with some Russian-specific requirements around propulsion redundancy + towing capability. Notations Arc4 through Arc9 (Arc9 being the LK-60Ya icebreaker class). Yamal LNG shuttle tankers are typically Arc7 + equivalent PC3.
