Sea Cloud is a four-masted sailing barque built in 1931 at Krupp's Germaniawerft in Kiel, originally as the private yacht Hussar V for Marjorie Merriweather Post and E. F. Hutton. The vessel served as a US Navy weather ship and patrol vessel during WWII, then returned to private service before being acquired in 1978 for luxury cruise operation by Sea Cloud Cruises. Today she is the world's largest privately-owned sailing yacht in commercial service, operating Mediterranean and Caribbean luxury sailing itineraries with about 64 guests.
Sea Cloud crews handle a working sailing rig alongside passenger-ship operations — a rare modern combination. Deck officers and ratings split duties between traditional sail handling (yards, halyards, sheets, climbing aloft) and conventional ship operations. The 64-guest count means a small crew complement (around 60) with cross-departmental responsibilities. Sea Cloud experience is a portable credential in the luxury sailing-yacht and tall-ship cruise sectors.
