MSC Flaminia

Summary

MSC Flaminia is a 2001-built German-flagged container ship (85,823 GT) that suffered a devastating cargo-hold fire and explosion mid-Atlantic on 14 July 2012, en route from Charleston to Antwerp. Divinylbenzene and other reactive chemicals stowed in an under-deck bay ignited; the resulting explosion killed three of the 25 crew (two bodies recovered). Survivors were rescued by MV DS Crown after three days in lifeboats. Flaminia was towed to Wilhelmshaven, rebuilt over 18 months, and returned to service. The casualty drove IMO's 2016 amendments to IMDG Code stowage of self-reactive substances.

Crew perspective

Flaminia is the textbook modern container-fire case: the crew followed the attack-from-windward-then-abandon playbook, but the explosion pre-empted every fire-team option. A generation of chief mates and second engineers has since drilled 'confirm IMDG segregation before signing the stowage plan' as a career-critical duty — Flaminia is why.
