Overview
COSCO SHIPPING Lines is the container-shipping arm of China COSCO Shipping Corporation, the state-owned Chinese maritime conglomerate. Headquartered in Shanghai. The group operates around 500 container vessels plus extensive bulk, tanker, and specialised tonnage under sister brands. COSCO's growth tracks Chinese exports — the largest single-flag container operator by TEU on Asia–Europe and Asia–North America routes.
For seafarers
Contracts 6-9 months with mid-tier pay. The fleet is Chinese-officer-led at senior ranks (Shanghai Maritime University and Dalian Maritime University pipelines) with international crew at rating and junior-officer level. Chinese-language proficiency is normal for senior positions on Chinese-flag tonnage; English is the working language for international officers.
Watch for
COSCO is state-owned and policy-driven; sanctions and trade-policy changes can affect crew rotations to specific routes (US west-coast ports, Mediterranean transits) more than at privately-held competitors. Confirm route and contract terms before joining.
