Overview
Hapag-Lloyd is the world's fifth-largest container shipping line, headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. Major shareholders are CSAV (Chile), Klaus-Michael Kühne, and the City of Hamburg. The company is the successor to Hamburg's century-old shipping heritage and operates around 290 vessels. Hapag-Lloyd is a member of THE Alliance (with ONE, Yang Ming, and HMM) for vessel sharing on east-west trades.
For seafarers
Contracts 4-6 months with mid-to-high pay tier. German officer pipeline through Hamburg (Hochschule Wismar) and Bremen maritime institutes; rating and junior-officer recruitment heavily from the Philippines, India, and Eastern Europe. Strong cadet sponsorship programme with German shipping schools.
Watch for
German-flag and CSAV-legacy tonnage may have different labour-law footing. Hapag-Lloyd has been notably conservative on alliance reshuffling — joining a Hapag-Lloyd vessel means joining a known THE Alliance route schedule.
