Overview
MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company is the largest container shipping line in the world by TEU capacity, having overtaken Maersk in 2022. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the company is privately owned by the Aponte family. MSC operates around 850 vessels and is the parent group of MSC Cruises (the cruise brand profiled separately). MSC's growth has been the fastest in the industry — almost entirely organic, not acquisition-driven.
For seafarers
MSC contracts run 4-6 months with mid-to-high pay tier. The fleet is internationally crewed with strong Italian, Eastern European, and Indian/Filipino officer pipelines. MSC's Indian cadet programme operates through manning agencies in Mumbai and Chennai. Officer progression is faster than at Maersk because the fleet is growing faster — new tonnage means new senior berths.
Watch for
MSC is privately held and decisions can change quickly compared to public-company peers; manning policies and contract terms shift contract-to-contract more than at Maersk. Use the official MSC Crewing channel and avoid agencies claiming MSC connections without verification.
