The Tanzania-flagged general cargo vessel Aeolos was abandoned off the Egyptian Red Sea coast with 12 crew from Ukraine, Russia, and Syria. The shipowner became uncontactable in February 2020. Wages had been unpaid for six months. The COVID-19 pandemic complicated repatriation across three home countries. Egyptian port authorities blocked shore leave, worsening isolation. ITF Egypt coordinated with the Ukrainian and Russian embassies for phased repatriations from mid-2020, with the last crew members leaving in June 2021. The vessel remained abandoned in the anchorage and was subsequently arrested for judicial sale to recover a portion of the unpaid wages.
