The Comoros-flagged general cargo vessel Baraka was abandoned at Bandar Abbas anchorage, Iran, with 8 crew including Indian and Syrian nationals. Wages had stopped four months earlier and the shipowner became uncontactable in early 2022. Iran-Comoros diplomatic channels for repatriation are limited, and Iranian sanctions posture complicated ITF and consular access. Comoros Maritime — one of the smaller flag registries — worked with ITF Mumbai and the Indian Embassy in Tehran to secure repatriation over eleven months. The vessel remained at Bandar Abbas anchorage. The case highlighted the concentration of abandonment cases on the smaller open-registry flags where DMLC verification is weaker.
