2022-2023 · Port Klang anchorage, Malaysia · status: resolved
The Palau-flagged general cargo vessel Blue Mangroves was abandoned at Port Klang anchorage, Malaysia, in August 2022 with 11 Myanmar and Indonesian crew. MLC financial-security had expired the month before abandonment — a common pattern where the insurer's cancellation notice pre-dates the crew realising they are without wages. Malaysian authorities allowed the crew to remain on board on humanitarian grounds while ITF Kuala Lumpur coordinated with Palau International Ship Registry (IRR). Progress was slow — Palau IRR is one of the smaller flag registries and had to convene a specific committee for the abandonment declaration. Crew were repatriated to Yangon and Jakarta between March and May 2023.
all 11 repatriated after 8-9 months; wage recovery limited.
