The Sierra Leone-flagged general cargo vessel Fahmi was abandoned at Shuwaikh port, Kuwait, in June 2020 amid the peak COVID-19 crew-change crisis. 11 Egyptian, Syrian, and Indian crew remained on board for over 10 months. Sierra Leone registry is one of the smaller open registries where DMLC-verification enforcement is limited. ITF Kuwait + Egyptian consular services coordinated repatriation, complicated by pandemic border-closure protocols. Crew were progressively repatriated May 2021.
all 11 repatriated after 11 months; wage recovery limited.
