Questions before signing — what to ask the agent + the master

The questions that distinguish a legitimate offer from a sketchy one. A real agent + a real owner answer these clearly; a scam recruiter changes the subject.

Seafarers about to sign — anyone, from cadet to chief engineer. The questions are the same; the answers tell you whether to sign.

Practical steps

1. Send the questions in writing (WhatsApp / email). Real recruiters reply in writing.
2. Compare the answers against what's on /companies and /ships.
3. If any answer is evasive or contradictory, escalate to the union / ITF inspector before signing.

Checklist

• Who is the principal shipowner? (Should be a named legal entity.)
• What is the vessel name and IMO?
• What flag does it fly today?
• What is the basic wage, in what currency, paid how often?
• Is overtime guaranteed, hourly, or capped?
• How is leave pay calculated and when is it paid?
• Who pays travel to and from the vessel?
• Who pays for visa + medical + PEME?
• What is repatriation entitlement (MLC A2.5.1)?
• Which P&I club holds the financial-security certificate?
• Which CBA applies and where can I read it?
• Are deductions listed and explained?
• Will the SEA be the same one I see now, or different at the gangway?
• What is the manning agency's licence number and regulator?

Common mistakes

• Asking the questions over the phone only. Get answers in writing.
• Accepting 'we'll explain at the gangway' — a real owner has the answers now.
