Send-home portion of wages — MLC A2.2(4), payee, frequency, fees, how to change.

What it is

A standing instruction to the shipowner to transfer all or part of your wages directly to a nominated recipient (usually a family member) at a stated frequency. MLC A2.2(4) gives seafarers the right to make such a transfer.

Who needs it

Most seafarers supporting families ashore.

When it is checked

• At sign-on.
• When changing the payee or amount.

Common mistakes

• Beneficiary name spelt differently from the bank-account name — the bank rejects.
• Currency mismatch — clarify the currency and FX rate up front.
• Hidden remittance fees deducted from the seafarer's wages.
