P&I cover, personal accident cover, repatriation insurance — what your employer carries and what you may add.

What it is

Records confirming the vessel's P&I cover (compulsory under MLC 2014 amendments for repatriation and abandonment), the seafarer's personal accident cover (often part of the SEA), and any privately purchased medical or repatriation insurance the seafarer adds for risk such as gaps in coverage or family rider.

Who needs it

Every seafarer, with a written confirmation of the financial-security certificate carried onboard under MLC A2.5.2.

When it is checked

• At sign-on.
• After injury, illness, or abandonment.

Common mistakes

• Not knowing whether the vessel carries MLC financial security — ask the Master to see the certificate at sign-on.
• Assuming the employer's P&I covers the family — usually it doesn't.
