The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System is the integrated radio + satellite framework for maritime distress + safety communications. Combines VHF DSC + MF/HF DSC + Inmarsat + Iridium safety services + NAVTEX + EPIRB + SART. Sea areas A1 (VHF coverage) through A4 (polar) determine required equipment.
