Hydrogen-sulphide hazard awareness required for crew on tankers and OSVs handling sour cargoes.
Regulatory detail & full definition
Hydrogen-sulphide hazard awareness training required for crews on tankers and offshore vessels handling sour crudes or working in fields with H2S exposure risk. The course covers H2S chemistry, exposure limits (ACGIH and OSHA), detection by fixed and portable monitors, escape sets and SCBA, casualty handling, and rescue procedures. OPITO standards govern the offshore-tanker H2S course; ISGOTT addresses tanker-specific procedures. H2S is fatal at 700 ppm and disables sense of smell at 100 ppm, so training emphasises that the absence of odour is not evidence of safety.
