STCW V/1-1 (oil/chemical) and V/1-2 (gas) basic and advanced training required for tanker crews. Basic training is required for all crew with cargo-related duties; the advanced course is required for officers in charge of cargo operations. Topics cover cargo characteristics, cargo handling systems, ESD, IGS, COW, vapour control, ISGOTT/IGC compliance, and emergency response. Advanced courses include simulator-based exercises. Refresher training every five years is required under the 2010 Manila Amendments. Vetting departments flag missing or expired tanker certificates as a high-priority observation.
