Toxic substances (6.1) and infectious substances (6.2).
Regulatory detail & full definition
IMDG Class 6 covers toxic and infectious substances. Class 6.1 includes toxic chemicals such as cyanides, arsenic compounds, and pesticides, with packing groups determined by oral, dermal, and inhalation toxicity thresholds. Class 6.2 covers infectious substances (e.g. clinical specimens, cultures, medical waste with infection risk). Stowage and segregation requirements account for the human-health hazard rather than fire risk; foodstuffs must be segregated 'separated from' toxic substances. Specific UN packaging instructions apply for shipping of pathogenic samples under WHO and IATA-aligned rules.
