Polar Water Operational Manual

Abbreviation: PWOM

Document carried aboard polar-going ships describing routing, equipment, crew capabilities, and emergency response in polar waters.

Regulatory detail & full definition
Document required by Polar Code Part I-A Chapter 2 to be carried on every ship operating in polar waters. It records the ship's operating limits, its capability to operate in expected ice conditions and low temperatures, the procedures to follow when those limits are reached, the safety equipment carried, and the procedures for monitoring and maintaining ice-strengthening systems and damage control. The manual is approved by the Administration or its recognised organisation as part of issuing the Polar Ship Certificate; deficiencies in the manual are routinely flagged at port-state-control inspections in Arctic and Antarctic waters.
