Running Moor

Anchoring procedure in which the first anchor is laid while the ship is making way ahead, then the ship runs forward over the laid anchor while paying out chain, drops the second anchor, and then heaves on the first while veering on the second to balance the catenaries. The result is two anchors on the same line of bearing with the ship moored between them. The technique is used in restricted swinging room and where strong tides reverse direction. Skill in chain handling and timing is the critical operational skill.
