Abbreviation: STP
A biological or chemical system treating shipboard sewage to standards permitting overboard discharge under MARPOL Annex IV.
Biological treatment plants depend on active bacterial cultures that can be killed by chlorine-based cleaning agents or disrupted by sudden changes in organic load. Engineers must monitor dissolved oxygen levels, sludge condition, and effluent clarity, and avoid routing strong cleaning chemicals into the sewage system. Ships operating in the Baltic Sea special area must comply with enhanced nitrogen and phosphorus discharge limits. Sewage treatment plants are inspected by port state control officers in the Baltic and North Sea, and the sewage record must be maintained when operating within special areas.
