An intermediate deck between the upper and lower decks of a cargo hold, providing separate stowage tiers for break-bulk cargo.
In practice
The chief mate plans 'tween-deck stowage considering the structural limitations—'tween decks are typically rated for a lower deck loading than the tank top—and the discharge order, placing cargo for the last port of call in the lower hold and cargo for the first discharge port in the 'tween deck for easy access. Break-bulk cargoes such as bagged rice, tinned goods, and project machinery are routinely carried in 'tween decks. Dunnage is laid on the 'tween deck to protect bagged cargo from moisture and to distribute loads. The OOW surveys the 'tween decks during the voyage to check for bilge water accumulation, cargo shift, and lashing condition, reporting deficiencies to the chief mate.
Regulatory detail & full definition
'Tween deck refers to the intermediate deck or decks fitted between the uppermost deck and the tank top (bottom) of a general cargo or bulk carrier hold, dividing the hold into upper and lower cargo spaces. The 'tween deck can be a permanent structural deck or a portable folding or lift-out panel system. Its primary purpose is to provide segregated cargo stowage levels, allowing different cargo parcels to be carried above and below without commingling. SOLAS Chapter VI requires that cargo in 'tween decks be properly stowed and secured in accordance with the Cargo Securing Manual.
