Long contracts and family separation are not 'in the contract' the way wages and certificates are, but the cumulative cost is one of the biggest reasons seafarers leave the industry. Routines help — predictable calls, shared rituals, agreed boundaries about money and decisions ashore. Friction is normal. Silence is the problem.

Practical steps

• Agree a regular call schedule that fits the watch routine.
• Pre-fund the home account so partners are not financially stressed mid-contract.
• Build a contact tree — one shoreside friend who can answer if family cannot reach you.
• Plan the homecoming — first 48 hours are often the hardest.
