Heat stress in the engine room

Engine-room temperatures 40°C+ in tropical trades are the primary cause of heat exhaustion + heat stroke among engineering ratings.

Modern engine rooms in tropical waters routinely exceed 45°C during watches, especially near auxiliary engines + fuel purifiers. Prolonged exposure without hydration + rest breaks progresses from heat cramps to heat exhaustion to potentially fatal heat stroke. Older engineers + those on cardiovascular medication are at higher risk.

Practical steps

• Hydrate before entering the ER — 500 ml water 30 minutes before watch.
• Sip 250 ml every 30 minutes during watch; oral electrolyte solution during 4-hour watches in tropical waters.
• Take a 15-minute break every hour in a cooler space (engine control room aircon).
• Wear lightweight cotton coveralls; change out of sweat-soaked kit at watch handover.
• Chief Engineer + Master should reduce ER manning during 12:00-14:00 tropical peaks.

When to escalate

• Cramps + dizziness — remove from ER immediately + rehydrate; heat exhaustion progressing.
• Confused, red skin, no sweating — heat stroke; medical emergency, cool the body, TMAS consultation, MEDEVAC likely.
• Any collapse in the engine-room space — treat as combined heat + confined-space emergency; rescue team + medical response together.
