AMOSUP · Founded 1960 · Manila, Philippines · Philippines
AMOSUP is by far the largest single national seafarer union in the world. Founded 1960 in Manila by Captain Gregorio S. Oca, the union today represents ~90,000 Filipino seafarers working on foreign-flag vessels — a figure larger than the seafarer memberships of most European unions combined. Given that Filipinos comprise ~25% of the global seafarer workforce, AMOSUP's scale directly shapes the international bargaining landscape. The union operates the Seamen's Hospital in Cavite City (Southeast Asia's largest maritime hospital), three USCG- and MARINA-approved training campuses (Manila, Iloilo, Cavite), and — critically for member seafarers — a mature wage-recovery infrastructure that handles hundreds of manning-agent disputes annually. AMOSUP-signed contracts on FoC vessels typically anchor to the ITF Uniform TCC rather than the higher IBF benchmark; for that reason many Filipino officers seeking upgrade opportunities target IMEC-CBA contracts rather than AMOSUP-only berths.
