Danish sea-transport sector of the general union 3F. Negotiates the DIS CBAs (Dansk Internationalt Skibsregister) covering Danish-flag deep-sea vessels — many operated by Maersk Line, Torm, and DFDS Seaways. Also negotiates DFDS ferry CBAs on the Copenhagen-Oslo, Copenhagen-Świnoujście, and Denmark-Sweden routes.
Danish seafarer union (part of 3F transport-workers federation) + CO-Sea is the Nordic seafarer union coordination body (Denmark + Norway + Sweden + Finland). Negotiates the JNG (Joint Negotiating Group) Nordic CBA framework — one of the strongest national CBA frameworks in the world.
Primary Japanese seafarer union. Founded 1945 during the post-war US Occupation. Represents Japanese officers on the Japan-controlled foreign-flag deep-sea fleet (predominantly NYK, MOL, and K-Line vessels), plus the smaller domestic coastal fleet. Runs the JSU-IBF-signed contracts that cover the majority of Japan-controlled deep-sea tonnage.
Second-largest US maritime officer union. Represents licensed deck and engine officers on US-flag deep-sea contracts (Maersk Line Limited, Overseas Shipholding Group, TOTE Maritime, Crowley Liner Services) plus Great Lakes Steamer Association vessels. Runs Star Center training campus in Dania Beach — one of the largest US STCW training campuses.
Largest single seafarer union in the world by membership. Represents Filipino officers, ratings, and cadets on foreign-flag vessels via AMOSUP-signed ITF or IBF CBAs. Operates the Seafarers' Hospital in Cavite City, three seafarer training schools in Manila and Iloilo, and a pension + wage-recovery scheme for members.
Officer-only counterpart to the MUA. Negotiates CBAs for licensed masters, deck officers, engineers, and integrated ratings on Australian-flag deep-sea + coastal + offshore-oil-and-gas fleets. Long-standing ITF affiliate.
Under All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) umbrella. Coordinates Chinese seafarer welfare + wage-schedule frameworks with Chinese shipping companies + Chinese Ministry of Transport. Rare among ITF affiliates in operating under a state-supervised union framework.
Primary Croatian seafarer union + ITF affiliate. Represents Croatian officers + ratings on Croatian-flag + foreign-flag vessels; historically strong on tanker + product-tanker + coastal-Mediterranean trades.
Umbrella federation of Korean maritime + shipbuilding trade unions. Coordinates advocacy with Korean government + shipbuilding conglomerates. Represents Korean seafarers on Korean-flag + Korean-controlled tonnage internationally.
Employer counterpart to the ITF in the International Bargaining Forum (IBF). Negotiates the IBF Framework Agreement — the industry-standard CBA covering ~14,000 vessels manned by IMEC-member operators. Sets the IBF Total Crew Cost (TCC) benchmark, which is the employer-side counterpart to the ITF Uniform TCC.
Parent global federation. Runs the ITF Flags of Convenience campaign, sets the ITF Uniform TCC (Total Crew Cost) benchmark that many FoC-vessel CBAs anchor to, and deploys inspectors in ~100 ports worldwide to enforce ITF-signed CBAs on FoC vessels.
Primary US union for licensed marine engineers on US-flag deep-sea, Great Lakes, and inland waterways vessels. Negotiates CBAs with US-flag operators including Matson, Crowley, Hapag-Lloyd USA, Grand Bahama Shipyard, and the Military Sealift Command civilian mariner fleet. Also runs the Calhoun MEBA Engineering School in Baltimore — a licensed STCW training centre offering upgrades to USCG competencies.
Primary Ukrainian seafarer union + ITF affiliate. Coordinates repatriation + wage advocacy for Ukrainian seafarers on foreign-flag vessels. Since February 2022 Russian invasion has had an outsized role coordinating extraordinary repatriation cases + emergency support for Ukrainian crews unable to return home.
Primary Australian union for seafarers, waterside workers, and offshore-oil-and-gas workers. Historically militant + politically active; the 1998 Australian waterfront dispute (Patrick Corporation lockout) is the touchstone modern industrial-relations case in Australian shipping. Negotiates CBAs with Australian-flag operators + offshore-industry contractors.
Primary maritime industrial union for New Zealand, formed by the 2002 merger of the NZ Seafarers' Union and the Waterfront Workers' Union. Represents port workers, coastal shipping, ferry, and offshore-support-vessel crew. Runs regular disputes with the Ports of Auckland Ltd and the Cook Strait ferry operators over rostering, safe manning, and casualisation.
Primary Indian seafarer union. ITF affiliate and IBF signatory. Represents Indian seafarers on foreign-flag vessels through employment contracts negotiated with DG Shipping-licensed RPSL manning agencies. Operates the NUSI Maritime Academy in Goa (STCW training) and a substantial welfare fund for members.
Professional and industrial union for maritime officers in the UK, Netherlands, and Swiss inland shipping. Formed by the 2009 merger of NUMAST (UK) with Nautilus NL. Negotiates British Merchant Navy CBAs, Dutch KVNR agreements, and Swiss inland-shipping CBAs; runs a substantial legal-support arm for members facing manning-agency disputes, incident inquiries, and pension issues.
Primary Norwegian seafarer union. Negotiates CBAs covering Norwegian International Ship Register (NIS) vessels and Norwegian Ordinary Register (NOR) vessels — the two-tier registration system that lets Norwegian owners choose between NIS (foreign-crewed, competitive-labour-market conditions) and NOR (Norwegian-crewed, full domestic terms). Also negotiates offshore-vessel CBAs covering the North Sea offshore support fleet.
